About the Expository Writing Program

Professor Candice Rai assumed the role of Director of Expository Writing at the University of Washington in Fall 2014. At UW, her teaching, research, and service orient toward an interest in connecting with and contributing to public life and local communities—in the form of public scholarship and engagement, community-based writing pedagogies, and the broader study of public formations, discourse, policies, and collective action in traditional research projects. Broadly conceived, her work examines how rhetoric (language, symbols, performances, gestures) and textual artifacts (including written, visual, and multimodal genres) emerge from and shape everyday social, political, and material conditions, contexts, and experiences and explores how people use rhetoric to get things done and how we might best teach others to produce consequential texts and to effectively (and ethically) communicate across and within complex and diverse academic and public situations.
