Course Overview and Objectives

The Writing Studio is a 2-credit (C/NC) course that meets two days a week for 50 minutes.  This studio is designed for multilingual students (whose first language is not English) who are currently taking an English composition class and who want to continue developing their ability to understand and produce academic writing. 

In our class we will work to:

1)   Strengthen your academic reading skills to help you comprehend and analyze complex texts (specifically those from your English composition class but the skills will apply to the various reading you do at the University) in order to produce more substantive pieces of writing.

2)   Develop strategies for understanding and utilizing academic vocabulary as well as for understanding the conventions of academic writing, such as rhetorical analysis and major papers with complex claims.

3)   Learn how to interpret assignment prompts in order to understand and meet writing task expectations.

4)   Develop your critical thinking and meta-cognitive skills in order to become aware of your own writing and revision process through group peer review, error logs, discussion, reflection, and critical analysis.

5)   Review and analyze grammar structures, focusing on how they apply to organization and produce different effects in academic writing.

6)   Learn to successfully communicate with professors at UW over email and during office hours as well as become familiar with the resources on campus to further help you with your English and academic writing throughout your education at the UW.

What to Bring

____ A laptop for Google Doc group collaboration and other activities

____ An active UW email account that you check daily

____ Required: Pocket Style Manual by Diana Hacker (5th edition, green)

Course Requirements

Similar to all college classes, you are expected to:

  • attend class on time and come prepared.
  • finish all assignments (Late work will NOT be accepted.)
  • participate in-class and group discussion actively.

-Individual support for your composition course work and beyond during office hours and extended office hours  

-respond your email promptly: 24 hours during weekdays and by Monday during weekends.

Attendance and Participation Policy

To get the most out of this course, your attendance is essential.  Three absences will lead to no credit for this class. Two lates equal to an absence.  Missing two of the assignments below will also lead to no credit for the class.


1) a group rhetorical analysis  (1st draft, in group)  

2) a group revision on "bigger picture" (in class)

3) a group revision on "grammar" (in class)

4) 2 out of 4 reflections (1-1.5 page, double space, on Canvas)

5) a final reflection to your Final Portfolio

6) several in-class assignments due in classes

A note from your instructor:

Seven years ago, the English Department and General Studies offered this course for the first time. We are very excited to be able to offer it to you this quarter and provide additional writing support. At times you will be asked for your feedback about the course as we continue to develop it to best help students like you on campus.  We would like to see if we can use a course like this for different majors and subjects and can only make it better with help from you.  I look forward to working with you this quarter!

Catalog Description: 
Supports multilingual students concurrently enrolled in a composition course. Builds academic reading skills in order to analyze complex texts, review, and analyze grammar structures to produce different writing effects. Also assists students to develop critical reflective skills to become better familiarized with the writing and revision process. Credit/no-credit only.
