Doctor of Philosophy Program Guide: Admission

  • Students with recent Master’s degrees from other institutions should apply for admission to the Ph.D. program in their third quarter and must apply in their fourth.
  • Students with the MA degree in English from the University of Washington should apply for admission to the Ph.D. program by the fourth week following completion of the MA degree. They should apply by the end of the sixth quarter but must apply in the seventh.
  • Students with MFA or MAT(ESOL) degrees from UW who wish to continue on to the Ph.D. program must apply on-line by the December 15 deadline for the following Autumn Quarter of the next calendar year.
  • Students who fail to be admitted to doctoral study will lose graduate standing at the end of the quarter in which their application is denied.

Students apply for admission to the Ph.D. program by submitting a letter to the Director of Graduate Studies and the Graduate Studies Committee. The letter must name 1) the faculty member who has agreed to chair the student’s Ph.D. Exam Committee; 2) the two additional faculty who have agreed to serve on the committee or two additional faculty whom you expect to ask, and 3) the three Ph.D. examination areas. The letter should also summarize previous and future coursework, explain its connection to the Ph.D. exam areas, and indicate future research plans. The Graduate Studies Committee reviews all applications, taking into account the student’s performance in graduate coursework and on the MA Essay at the University of Washington. When admitted, students will receive a letter asking them to meet with the Director of Graduate Studies to discuss the constitution of the Ph.D. Exam Committee, exam areas, and the next steps in the program.
