Program in Writing and Rhetoric Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Collaboration Grant Winners 2021-22

The Expository Writing Program is proud to announce the recipients for the 2021-22 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Collaboration Grant. This grant is for graduate student groups and is focused on developing composition curriculum, teacher resources, and research initiatives that center issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the writing classroom. Additionally, this grant seeks to support projects that promote more equitable, inclusive, diverse, accessible, and socially just writing practices, curriculum, and classrooms and that contribute to our teaching community, encourage collaboration, and nurture professional growth. You can read more about the EWP seed grant and application process here.

Two collaboration groups were selected during Winter Quarter 2022 and worked on projects during Winter and Spring 2022. Below you can find project titles, brief descriptions, and team members.

Toward a Translingual Approach: Deepening Our Work with Translingualism by Incorporating Compassionate Reading and Equitable Assessment Strategies into Our Classroom
Workshop and accompanying materials created by MiSun Garrison and Rebecca J. Taylor

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to demonstrate their ability to understand a translingual approach in the classroom, understand monolingual vs translingual ideologies, understand code-switching and code-meshing, and incorporate a translingual approach in assessing student writing.

Anti-Racist Teacher Training Through Metacognitive Reflection Assignment Design
Workshop and accompanying materials created by Jennie Baker and Kaelah Rose

Created a lesson-plan skeleton structure and process to support instructors in designing class activities keyed to learning outcomes and course goals as well as a means for reflecting on those goals. Offered a workshop for instructors prior to Autumn 2022.
