Late Summer/Early Fall Exploration Seminar
Available to graduate students and advanced undergraduates with an interest in language teaching
We are excited to be offering a TESOL internship teaching English in Agadir, Morocco. It is open to graduate students and advanced undergraduates (with senior status at the time the program begins) who have a desire to gain experience teaching English as a foreign language. Students must have excellent English language skills and a strong interest in language teaching.
The main feature of this program is an internship, which will allow program participants to teach English to local Arabic/French speakers at Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco. The internship will be accompanied by a class given by Program Director Professor Sandra Silberstein, including instruction in language pedagogy, daily debriefing and support, weekly writing assignments, and a final project, as well as a formal observation by the Program Directors.
Teaching English in Morocco will give program participants the opportunity to practice language teaching techniques in a real-world context. Undergraduates will be paired with graduate students, giving graduate students invaluable teacher training experience and providing undergraduates with close mentoring that will allow them to successfully engage in a wide range of activities. By being immersed in another culture, UW participants will gain cultural awareness, experience, and empathy that will make them stronger teachers of English to speakers of other languages in the United States and around the world.

Course credit: Five credits will be given for English 578 (graduate students) or English 474 (undergraduates).
Cost: Total costs are made up of the estimated Program Fee of $3,000 (which includes lodging, field trips, and credits) plus the UW Study Abroad Fee ($300), airfare, food (about $25/day), UW Study Abroad Insurance ($40/month), other health expenses/immunizations and personal spending money.
Students in the program will maintain their UW residency and any financial aid eligibility already established. Credits earned will be recorded on students' UW transcripts for Autumn Quarter 2014 and apply directly to UW graduation requirements.
