Program Description

This program provides students the opportunity to see Shakespeare's plays performed by the world's finest acting companies on legendary stages in London and Stratford Upon Avon. We'll see at least two plays at the famous Globe Theater in London, and another in the West End theater district. We'll also take a two day trip to Stratford Upon Avon where we will stay in B&Bs. We'll see one or two plays performed there by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the main festival theater. What we see will depend on what's on when we are there, but there will be plenty to choose from. We'll spend some time in the classroom,of course, but many of our sessions will be outside in museums, art galleries, on walking tours of important theater districts in London and in seeing all of the Shakespeare properties in Stratford Upon Avon--from the house where he was born, to Ann Hathaway's Cottage, to Holy Trinity Church where he is buried. This program is designed for UW undergraduates from all departments and majors. Peter Buckroyd and Bill Streitberger have more than two decades of experience in helping students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds learn to understand and appreciate Shakespeare performances on stage in London and Stratford. There are two options available to students to enroll in this program. The first is simply to apply for admission to this 5 credit Early Fall program through UW Study Abroad The second option is to link the Early Fall program to English 322 (The "Golden Age" of Elizabeth I), 5 credits, which will be offered in Summer Quarter A term at UW. By opting for the linked course students could earn 10 credits total for the combined experience.

An interest in Shakespeare and in stage productions of his plays. Like all large cities getting around London requires a fair amount of walking and students should be aware that daily walks and commutes are part of the program.

ENGL 395: Shakespeare on Stage - London and Stratford Upon Avon (5 credits) A&H; W (by arrangement)

A study of the texts and performances of four or five of Shakespeare'[s plays in production in London and Stratford Upon Avon. What plays we study will depend on what's on during the time of our program, but in every year there are a variety of Shakespeare's plays on offer in London at the Globe and other West End venues and in the Royal Festival theaters in Stratford. We'll read and discuss the texts before we see them in the theater and we will learn to "read" the performances on stage--the styles of acting and movement, the delivery of dialogue, the contributions of setting and costuming, the impact of lighting, music, and other sound effects, and the relationship between audience and stage production fostered by the venue itself. We'll spend some time in class, of course, but many of our session will be conducted in museums, art galleries, and on walking tours of theater districts in London and of the Shakespeare properties in Stratford.

Learning goals include:

To identify iambic pentameter and other verse forms and to evaluate their effects. To understand the role of genre in interpreting texts. To appreciate the differences among different types of venues and the impact they have on an audience's reception of performances. To grasp the importance of the effects of music, sound, and lighting in performances To appreciate the rhythm and style of dialogue on stage To understand the significance of different setting and costume designs (modern vs.traditional) To frame in both in discussion and in writing meaningful responses to the texts and productions

Program fees will be posted to your MyUW student account and can be paid the same way that you pay tuition and other fees. Check your MyUW Account periodically for due dates.

Financial Aid

A large percentage of UW students utilize financial aid to study abroad. Most types of financial aid can be applied to study abroad fees.
You can submit a revision request to increase the amount of aid for the quarter you are studying abroad. These additional funds are usually awarded in the form of loans. To apply, fill out a revision request form, attach the budget sheet (available via the link at the top of this brochure) and submit these documents to the Office of Student Financial Aid. There are many scholarships designed to fund students studying abroad. The UW administers a study abroad scholarship program and there are national awards available as well.
Scholarships vary widely in their parameters. Some are need-based, some are location-based, and some are merit-based.
