As students near the end of their coursework at UW, they must apply for admission to doctoral study by submitting a letter to the DGS and the Graduate Studies Committee. The letter must name:
- the faculty member who has agreed to chair the student’s Ph.D. Exam Committee
- the two additional faculty who have agreed to serve on the committee or two additional faculty whom the student expects to ask
- the three Ph.D. examination areas
The letter should also summarize previous and future coursework, explain its connection to the Ph.D. exam areas, and indicate future research plans. The Graduate Studies Committee reviews all applications, taking into account the student’s performance in graduate coursework and on the master’s essay at UW.
Students who fail to be admitted to doctoral study will lose graduate standing at the end of the quarter in which their Ph.D. letter is denied.
