ENGL 563: Ethnographic Research Methods in Language and Rhetoric

This course will provide foundational theoretical and practical understanding of ethnography, a family of methods that are used to study a culture, very broadly defined. We will begin with an overview of ethnography as a methodology and its epistemological underpinnings before exploring different types such as critical ethnography, autoethnography, and performance ethnography/ethnodrama. We will also read about and practice collecting common types of ethnographic data including interviews and field observations. Students will then analyze their data to create a mini-ethnographic project by the end of the quarter.
