Doctor of Philosophy Program Guide: Benchmarks

1: M.A. Degree

The M.A. degree may be completed in the fourth quarter, but must be completed by the end of the sixth quarter of full-time residence to maintain satisfactory progress.

2: Ph.D. Letter

  • Students with Master’s degrees from other institutions should apply for admission to the Ph.D. program in their third quarter and must apply in their fourth.
  • Students with the MA degree in English from the University of Washington should apply for admission to the Ph.D. program by the fourth week following completion of the MA degree. They should apply by the end of the sixth quarter but must apply in the seventh.
  • Students who fail to be admitted to doctoral study will lose graduate standing at the end of the quarter in which their application is denied.

3: Ph.D. Exams

Students should complete the Ph.D. exams in the fourth year of graduate study (third year for those entering with a master’s degree from elsewhere) but must complete the Ph.D. exams by the end of the fourth year (third year for those entering with a master’s degree) in order to make satisfactory progress.

4: Dissertation Prospectus

The Dissertation Prospectus should be completed and approved by the end of the quarter following completion of the General Examination, but must be completed and approved by the end of Autumn Quarter of the fifth year (fourth year for those entering with a master's degree).
