Stephanie Yu: Alien Language and Human Empire: Language Acquisition in Science Fiction as a Subversion of Imperial Relations with ‘Alien’

This study is about how the use of linguistic theory in science fiction's depiction of alien language can reflect imperial attitudes towards cultural interaction and analyzes how works of SF that focuses on the process of language acquisition, in particular in "Story of Your Life" and Babel-17, can subvert imperial attitudes towards cultural interaction.
