This study is a mixture of traditional narrative, original poetry, immigration notes, and photographs—it  is my attempt to retrace my family’s history in relation to the greater narrative of Chinese American history. The story of my mother’s maternal family, the “path of the Woo,” begins with Gum Saan (Golden Mountain) and Angel Island, and continues through the West Coast to Seattle’s Chinatown and Beacon Hill neighborhoods. This project is also my attempt to honor my ancestors and understand my position in the world, as an extension of those who have come before me. What does it mean to carry the memory of your ancestors? To live in the present, both influenced by the past, yet responsible to the future? How might poetry facilitate the reclamation of a history we were once excluded from? There is much left to be done, and much left to be understood, but this is a start.
